Gang officers find weapons cache

Police serving West Side Longo injunction arrest 6.

LONG BEACH — Long Beach police looking to serve a West Side Longo gang member with the city's newest gang injunction found their target, and then some, Sunday.

Officers on Sunday afternoon were searching for Ignacio Jiminez, a 31-year-old Long Beach man who is one of 10 West Side Longo gang members named in a civil injunction filed by City Prosecutor Tom Reeves last month.

Police found Jiminez at a home in the 1500 block of West 23rd Street, where they also found eight firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, three bulletproof vests and a pound of methamphetamine from the house and garage, said Sgt. David Cannan, a Long Beach Police Department spokesman.

The weapons included two assault rifles, one sawed-off shotgun, one submachine gun, a sawed-off .22 caliber rifle and three handguns, Cannan said.

"We're going to submit all these weapons to tests to see if they have been used in any crimes," Cannan said. "Some of the firearms are illegal simply to possess, such as the sawed-off and submachine guns.

The injunction, Long Beach's fifth since the first was filed against the same gang in 1995, bars active gang members of one of Long Beach's oldest and most notorious Latino street gangs, from engaging in a host of activities in an area bordered by the Terminal Island (103) and Long Beach (710) freeways, Hill Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Although there are only 10 names on the document, the injunction is enforced against all West Side Longo members, authorities say.

All six people in the home, including Jiminez, were arrested on weapons and drug charges and several were found in violation of their probation and parole, the sergeant said.

Arrested were: Ricardo Aguilar, 22, of Long Beach; Joseph Estrada, 22, of Long Beach; Sara Leong, 27, of Long Beach; Jimmy Montoya, 32, of Santa Ana; and Jessica Vargas, 26, of Long Beach.

Everyone was served with the injunction as well, Cannan added.
