On Wednesday, Jane Rodriguez, a document examiner for the Los Angeles Police Department testified in the Stephanie Lazarus murder trial. She told the jury that she examined the tattered envelope that the bite swab tube taken from Sherri Rasmussen’s left arm was stored in. The envelope was not only in frayed condition, the 1986 writing on the envelope had faded and was not visible under normal lighting conditions.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Using a video spectral comparator, Rodriguez was able to reveal the original writing of the faded ink using infrared. The faded ink revealed “swabbed bite mark, left arm” and signed by “LM,” the initials of Lloyd Mahaney on the envelope.

This analysis also reveal backwards writing on the reverse side of the envelop that was transfered from another document in what Rodriguez described as “ink tranference.” Ink can be transfered from one surface to another if two surfaces come into contact with some pressure.

What was unclear was how can one tell the difference between the original ink from the envelope and the ink that was transfered from another surface. It was not clear if the infrared makes a distinction between the two types, because Rodriguez testified that she concluded that the writing found on the reverse side of the envelope was transfered because it was backwards.
