February 12, 2012 | 4:50 p.m. PST

On Thursday, Det. Dante Palacio of the Los Angeles Police Department, testified in the Stephanie Lazarus murder trial. He was assigned to the Professional Standards Bureau that conducts internal investigations of other LAPD officers and in 2009, the department was looking at Lazarus as a possible suspect in the 1986 murder of Sherri Rasmussen.

Det. Palacio was working with Det. Roberto Morales and they were assigned to surreptitiously obtain a DNA sample from Lazarus in a public place. On May 28, 2009 they were able to acquire a white cup that she drank from while sitting at an outside food court of Coscto. Morales retrieved two cups from the trash while Palacio provided the envelope for storage.

Palacio testified that he could see his partner Morales sitting about 10 feet from Lazarus in the food court. After Morales placed the cups into the envelope, he drove about two blocks and passed the envelop to Sgt. Jim Hensley.

Palacio has 16-years with the LAPD.
