Uninformed Radio Host Claims Smear Campaign against Jamiel Shaw

I recently wrote an article about the murder of Jamiel Shaw to emphasize that the conflict between the Bloods and 18th Street is the primary reason why the shooter targeted Jamiel and not race. The main point is that Pedro Espinoza, was not on 5th Avenue looking for a random black person to murder. I was heavily criticized by Doug McIntyre from 790 KABC and many of his assertions about my article were completely wrong. What follows are responses to his statements made on May 13, 2008 from his morning radio show in Los Angeles.

*I never called Jamiel Shaw a “hardened gang banger” nor do I even come close to it in the article. The “hardened gang banger” or the hard core element of the gang is precisely what I am saying Jamiel was NOT. The word “gang” has become so stigmatized and over criminalized that the knee jerk reaction towards anything that is “gang-related” is to condemn those involved as criminals and domestic terrorists. Most of the members of a gang are not felonious offenders and most people cannot comprehend this dichotomy. The gang as a whole is not a criminal organization, but the hard core members use the gang as a conduit to express their anger, self-hate, crime and violence, while many of the other members take a back seat. The smaller group of hard core members are on a path of violent delinquent behavior regardless of gang membership because of their dysfunctional value system. Fortunately most gang members do not lash out so aggressively.

*McIntyre calling me a “self professed expert” I find a bit condescending. My education, articles published, nearly ten years working in the judicial system on gang cases, 15 years of research on gangs, being cited in dozens on books on the topic, working with the leading gang researchers in the country, appearing on more programs than I can count, producing television programs on the topic, I believe has established my credentials. I was even a guest on his show last year on the topic of gangs.

*I vehemently challenge the belief that the 18th Street gang in Los Angeles has a membership that includes 80 percent of illegal aliens. Just think about this number for a moment. Our illegal inmate population in California is about 15% (25,000 of 172,000 inmates). Our gang population in Los Angeles County of approximately 100,000 includes roughly 10% illegal aliens (high estimate) so if we assume that every illegal alien gang member in the County belongs to 18th Street, then at most you would have a gang that has 50 percent of its members illegal (Thats 10,000 of the total 20,000 members of 18th Street in LA County). But examining this with a little logic, we know that the illegal alien gang members are going to be disbursed throughout the 500 Hispanic gangs in the County. Additionally the 18th Street gang that has factions 40 years old, of roughly 20,000 members, is a generational gang that has a strong base of US born members, so it is impossible for that gang to have a population of 80 percent illegal aliens.

This erroneous statistic comes from a 2003 report by US Senator Dianne Feinstein, a politician that McIntyre and others on KABC would rarely rely on as a credible source of information because of her left leaning liberal record, but she has garnered some credibility from conservatives who now cite her on this outrageously false characterization. The statistic as it appears in Feinstein’s report cites the National Drug Intelligence Center, but the Senator’s report does not provide a proper citation for that statistic and her report claims that 80 percent of the State’s, not LA’s, 18th Street gang population is illegal. A Report by the National Alliance of Gang Investigators in 2005 uses the same statistic, but that report at least sites the National Drug Intelligence Center, U.S. Department of Justice, Connecticut Gang Threat Assessment report of 2003 and this report does not even talk about 18th Street, so where does this stat come from?

*Within the worst neighborhoods that are plagued with gangs, approximately ten to fifteen percent of the adolescent population gravitates towards gangs. This is actually a good sign, because it reveals that the gangs are not ravaging and terrorizing neighborhoods as McIntyre has suggested, and if you go to the Arlington Heights neighborhood on any day and drive through the community some might be surprised how appealing this community looks. Additionally, only a small portion of those that gravitate towards gangs exhibit habitual and predatory like criminal behavior.

*My analysis of what may have caused the shooter to kill Shaw is being reduced by McIntyre as “a short skirt defense” without understanding the severity and consequences of anyone who fashions themselves after or emulates gang culture. On one hand we are quick to criticize popular culture and hip-hop for promoting gang activity through rap music and videos and other medium used by the music industry, and rightfully so for its negative influence, however we do not want recognize its potential harm on young people and the danger it poses to walk the walk. To McIntyre, “what difference does it make?,” and to disregard this issue is irresponsible.

*A “gang-banger” is an active member of a gang who actively puts in violent work for his gang which includes shooting, assaults and murders, and I never put Shaw in a “gang-banger” category.

*My article never claimed that Shaw was in a gang database. The data base includes only those that the police have made contact with, so if you are in a gang, but never had police contact, you will not be in the database.

*The article I wrote, never stated that “Jamiel was responsible for his own death” nor does it even suggest to blame Jamiel. The murder of young Jamiel is horrific and I merely attempted to describe why the shooter targeted him. No matter what we learn about Jamiel, it is the shooter who was responsible for Jamiel’s death, and if found guilty he should receive a severe punishment.

I’ve always considered McIntyre to be a fair minded reliable conservative voice, but he misinterpreted my message to his audience and for those who never read it would have a completely different take on what I wrote. McIntyre has associated me with a political camp that preaches an “open border” policy for which I have no relationship with. Nor am I part of this “system” or a “game” as he contends, who supports illegal immigration, and I am not connected to the Mayor’s Office or aligned with anyone in the LA County District Attorney’s office.

I firmly believe that if one is found guilty of a serious crime such as the one Espinoza was found guilty of last year, the County government, who had Espinoza in custody, should have placed a hold on him, investigated his immigration status and then turned him over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

My analysis of the shooting was not done so to attack Jamiel’s Law, a proposed City ordinance or to uphold Special Order 40, a current City ordinance. If any entity is responsible for the events that led up to Jamiel’s murder, it should be our County government who had Espinoza in custody. Espinoza was arrested on November 18, 2007 in Culver City, California, and then turned over to the County to await trial in State Court where he was convicted and sentenced to serve his time in a County facility, that ultimately released him on March 1, 2008. The City of LA was not involved with in any actions related to the custody, arrest and/or prosecution of Espinoza stemming from his November arrest in 2007. The murder of Jamiel did occurred in the City of LA, but if the County turned Espinoza over to ICE (or if ICE placed a hold on Espinoza’s release), then Jamiel would be alive right now. None of the preventative measures that are being discussed and recommended by McIntyre and others would have stopped the County from releasing Espinoza from custody.

McIntyre is full of crap. If his My Space page isn't his it can be taken down by him in an hour. All he has to do is contact them. It's so obvious that Jamiel Shaw put up those pages. He's also not telling the truth about the D.A.'s office, which is saying that Jamiel was ked because the murderer thought he was with the Bloods. They've already said that, so what DA did he talk to?

With your background and experience I'm shocked that you feel compelled to explain anything to him when for years you would disregard members of your own forum..

Also, i am shocked at how long it has taken for the media to twist your message and facts while ignoring your expertise in this field. Twisting up points and the truth is something euro american media has practiced for decades. Illegal Immigrants, gang-banging, and the murder of J Shaw are also hot topics and makes for good ratings. Your article never suggested that Jamiel was a gang member, instead it pointed out the truth about youth associating themselves through jesters or slangs via My Space or though IM text messages. Youth today think that using the word "cuzz" or "crab" or "slob" in text messages or on their My Space page is harmless because they are not gang members. I appreciate that you explained the truth, how innocent, non gang affiliated kids get caught up with gang culture even though they are not gang members.
Don't let the negative feedback frustrate you anymore. You are the only one I know who has the most REAL knowledge on gang life so keep up the good work.

Give me a break. Your thinnly veiled excuses do not fool me. Now, it seems like you are saying that the victim was targeted because he was pretending to be a gang member. I'm still not satisfied.
Your Gang Credentials do not impress me. Infact, you could have spent that extra time on your hands creating programs that would better assist your people out of poverty, which is basically the driving force behind most of the madness.

I don't need a degree in gangology to know how the mind of a basic, low level, violent criminal works. There are many behaviorialist, psychologists and psychiatrists who have stulived the subject much more intensly than you.
If I didn't know any better, I would think that you wrote those replies yourself, but then….that would be a little strange.

Nobody likes violent criminals. When they should not be here in the first place, then that makes it all the worse. Why would anybody fight against that?

You are full of contradictions. If the law is targeting mexicans then the murderer was targeting promising young black men.

Dougie fresh is reaching. It’s a Jedi mind trick. He’s multiplexing topics and streamlining conclusions. Not too mention a slight generalization to squeeze his square views into round holes. If Alex and the self professed veteran conversed offline on a per topic basis…….they’d probably discover they have nothing significant to argue about. He’s taking Alex’s response on one topic, and applying them to slightly different topics, in this case that of immigration. Keep in mind it’s his job ruffle feathers; not always an easy task for a bald turkey. His primary agenda is immigration in which, for better or worse, Jamiel has become a martyr for. I have no problem with his view; but don’t insult my intelligence and tell me 2 + 2 = 4437.

To the best of my knowledge Mr. Alonzo has never justified poor Jamiel’s murder, he’s simply said it was based on gang rather than race, he’s taken the next step in attempting to substantiate this. STOP RIGHT THERE!!! Anything further is a different topic and until Alex says it, don’t make the stretch or assume he did.

As for Alex, if your intentions and heart our pure…….don’t waste a second vindicating yourself…..you know you can’t please everyone. The murder of Jamiel Shaw and why the truth is never a smear campaign.

The murder of Jamiel Shaw the 17 year old L.A.High football star who was shot and ked on March 2, in cold blood allegedly at the hands of Pedro Espinoza an illegal immigrant and member of 18th Street gang one of the largest Latino gangs in L.A.County — sent shockwaves throughout the nation.

It also has caused a national debate on Special order 40,Which is a mandate implemented in 1979 by the Los Angeles City council and Police Chief Daryl Gates preventing LAPD officers from obtaining immigration status from detained suspects.The mandate was passed in an effort to encourage residents who are in the country illegally to report crimes without intimidation.

Critics of the measure point out that the mandate also prevents officers from obtaining immigration status from gang members, violent criminals and other felons.Special order 40 is now back in the national spotlight with right wing radio and T.V.host's, conservatives and the family of Jamiel Shaw who are pushing for a Jamiel's Law named after Jamiel.

Part of this new law proposal would require law enforcement ask gang members of their citizenship. Now whether you support Jamiels law or not–that's not my issue. My focus for the last 15 years is continuing to try and save lives and helping to end gang violence in our community.

Which is why Jamiel’s murder is and should be a national concern. I believe it could have been avoided. Jamiel on several of his my space pages proclaimed that he was a member of Rollin 20’s NHB (Neighborhood Bloods). There are several pictures with Jamiel flashing gang signs and threatening rival gangs that included the crips and 18 th Street gang with violence which ironically is the gang his alleged ker is from.

Now there are some who are saying that pointing these facts out is a smear campaign and those that search for the truth are k-ingg Jamiel all over again.That’s ridiculous . Were not calling him a gang member.Jamiel called himself a gang member.In fact in several of his pictures he is dressed in red,which is the color of the Bloods.

He was ked wearing several items of red on. My point is this I don't believe Jamiel was a hard core gang member–he probably has no arrests and may not even be in the gang database.But he was net banging in cyberspace and that can be just as deadly. Even false claiming of a gang can get you ked.

Jamiel Shaw Sr. who I'm sure by all accounts was a good dad and did all he could for his son is wrong about some issues concerning his son’s tragic murder This was not a hate crime and his rhetoric has made tensions between Blacks and Latinos worse in this city.

Jamiel was targeted because his murderer thought he was a rival gang member based on his wearing of his red belt ,wrist bands and back pack.Mr. Shaw’s efforts with forcing prosecutor Michele Hanisee off the case after meeting with D.A.Steve Cooley and complaining about her work are very troubling. Hanisee by all accounts is a true professional and one of the best prosecutors in her office.

To slander and taint her work is unconscionable .I believe she probably told Mr. Shaw an inconvenient truth about Jamiel’s secret life of cyberspace gang banging and he couldn't handle it.So now it appears that Mr. Shaw and his supporters are willing to go at any length to stop the truth from getting out.

Their efforts include the slandering of prosecutor Hanisee as well as Mr. Shaw’s disgusting racial remarks about gang expert Alex Alonso on The John and Ken show on KFI radio last week. I for one don't care what anyone says about me and that includes members of the Shaw lynch mob.Their true target should be the website Myspace.com,which allowed Jamiel and so many others youths to currently post messages of promoting gangs, and threats of violence against other youths.

Our organization plans on calling a press conference this week and calling My Space out for not taking these pages and accounts down that promote gang violence.Jamiel is gone but maybe Jamiel's law should be an effort for the community to help monitor and hold Myspace.com accountable for spreading gang culture. I believe that Jamiel was a good son and outstanding athlete But he also was a member of My Space where he claimed membership in the Bloods street gang. The truth is never a smear campaign.

It’s nice to see more people on board…..agreement….always a good starting point and a precursor for progress. We have so much potential here in this country. We are exposed to peoples and cultures from all corners of the world without ever having to take a single step outside of our coastlines. NICE!!! L.A. serves as an excellent microcosm . But instead of embracing each others differences, we alienate them and play judge and jury ……as if there were a right and wrong. However, while racism bleeds America, casteism is the real issue. But we’re so preoccupied with this cultural/racial pissing contest that we can no longer identify the source of our own ailments.

QUICK!!! ADD WATER AND STIR PROFUSELY!!! DIVERSITY IS BURNING IN THE MELTING POT!!!

Caz, Onenation, Smq, Highpraise, Alex Alonso, etc…..all sollivers of truth….and truth is a commodity more precious than gold, diamonds, petroleum, etc….it’s the instrument that will allow us to finally understand our own ailments and then cure them. I don’t care how clever or creative you are, you CAN NOT effectively treat a MISdiagnosis. If you want to remove all illegal immigrants (illegal by today’s standards) that’s fine, but your still going to have plenty of Jamiel and Pedro’s left to deal with. All you’ve done is applied a band-aid to a ruptured artery waiting to explode. Oh, and let us not forget, the PR campaign, you folks will provide the city with blankets for comfort. BEAUTIFUL!!! Now let’s all get back to our wonderful carefree lives, for a day, maybe two if your lucky. Then the next time a Pedro murders a Jamiel, or a Jamiel murders a Pedro, we’ll take ALL gang members whose name starts with the same letter, “P” or “J”, based on the murderer, and ship them to a state with the same corresponding first letter. Alright, I’m being extremely diabolical and sarcastically playing those same extremes, but, you have to be tired of misdiagnosis, band-aids and blankets, or blanket statements for that matter. As far as gangs are concerned, it's NOT comfort; it's NOT security; it's NOT a solution. Let’s find an accurate diagnosis and match it with the appropriate treatment while we still have time. I'm not an idealist, I realize that even if were on the same page it will be VERY, VERY, VERY difficult, but if we’re all over the place it will be impossible!

High praise – Good luck with Myspace, I just hope that for the Shaw’s sake you’ve done your homework, otherwise this could potentially fall in their lap. My thoughts as I was reading your post and confronting Myspace for allowing him to post: “…hmmm…interesting…but you can’t attack freedom of speech no matter how senseless…wait a second Jamiel was a minor and they don’t always know the consequences of things they do or say…..they should be filtered…..so this is actually a pretty good idea…..but I wonder how old Jamiel said he was.”

If Jamiel was honest about this age and they allowed him to post that type of stuff…shame on Tom. If Jamiel lied about his age……..they’ll wash their hands with it and toss it right back in the lap of Mr. and Mrs. Shaw… “It’s not our fault the kid was dishonest and as a minor was not being monitored by adult supervision.” -Calm done everyone, this isn’t’ what I’m insinuating, but how Myspace will respond if Jamiel lied about his age.

I don’t know too much about Myspace……and regardless to what age Jamiel said he was, you have a noble fight if underage kids can post such things…..and I applaud you and all others for setting forth the groundwork of change. But for the sake of Jamiel’s parents find out first what age Jamiel said he was, so you know if his name should, or shouldn't be, in the equation.

Let’s also not lose track that Jamiel’s Myspace page was just a reflection of who he was. I realize by his police records, or lack of them I should say, his gang affiliation was real soft, unfortunately hard gang members from rival gangs don’t take that into consideration. So it could have been Myspace, a wall, his notebook, the soles of his shoes, his backpack,a picture, etc. It’s all a reflection of his condition and mentality. Again, while racism bleeds America, casteism is the real issue here!

I enjoy reading your comments and you raise an important subject about minors. But Jamiel says he's 17 years old on the one My Space page, along wiith his horoscope Capricorn. And he signed up for the other My Space page with as Jamiel Shaw so it was probably the same account. He was a minor and they knew it, though they probably didn't know they were providing these pages for gang banger language.

Just curious, even if Jamiel lied about his age and myspace gave your response, what does that have to do with as you put it "the sake of the Shaw's"?

The worst of the two My Space entries, the page that Alex Alonso wrote on in his UPDATE, with Jamiel claiming he was a CK and a BK has Jamiel's age. So on that he admitted being 17 also. High Praise has a worthy cause ahead.

The Eighteen Street and Blood Conflict is a gang war, not a race war.

It didnt start over Race but over Gang issues in the Jungles, the area around Dorsey High School/Baldwin Hills, back in the 1990's.

Eighteen St is one of those unique gangs that recruits all races.

Eighteen St has Black members.

Anyways, Jamiel was at best a Wanna-be who got confronted by a real gang member.

From what i have read it seems that they want to use the Illegal immagrant murder as a stepping stone towards other things, but lets remember the Black ganster who basically was shoting mostly Mexican/hispanic on the bus stop.
Why is there no upsising in that is it cause he only shot at Mexicans/hispanics

Regardless of what anyone says, Jamiel Shaw's murder was is a murder that was based on race, and not gang affiliation. We can interpret what this illegal had in his mind at the time, when it came to what motivated him to k Jamiel, but this man knows deep inside, he murdered Jamiel because he was black. And most surs don't view their scrap with black gangs as strictly a gang thing, but a racial thing.

I'm not fooled by certain mexican bangers, or mexicans in general, who come on here and claim it's all about the gang life, and not racist life. Most surs are racist, and their racism is given shelter and comfort, from within the general mexican community, who at it's core, hates black people.

Man, these comments are mean and just wrong. I'm not fooled by the family and supporters who put out this anger in totally unacceptable way. It makes me wonder if this child's anger issues started in the home and put him on the gang banging path.

How much of this anger was expressed wrongly in their home? Others have lost loved ones and not turned so inappropriate and mean spirited. In public! What do they do when no one is watching? Brrr.

I'd thought Jamiel was just showing off but now I think he was a banger for real. You grow up around meanness and it rubs off. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

You do realize 18th st, were pedro was from, is a unique in that it has a diverse make up of it's gang members, right, including black members? Thus being said its fair to say they don't have a problem with black people in general, but they have issues with bloods.

Pedro said what was going on in his head, he has beef with bloods.

It's amazing that this is even a debate still. People close to this situation, outside of Jamiels intermediate family, are quick to tell you he threw up his set from time to time and it caught him. So my guess is you are his immediate family or you've come to a conclusion w/o knowing a lot of facts.

I watched that same show today and the Black Sheriff deputy stated that "there is no race war between Blacks and Hispanics." I hope Alonso can post that video on the website. You notice that they always point to two places in LA when they talk about this "race war," Highland Park, 1999 and Harbor City in 2006, that's it. Dont sound like a race war to me.
