Syd Kronenthal Park was where Pedro Espinoza was arrested on November 18, 2007 in Culver City by Culver City PD. This park is located approximately 0.5 mile west from the particular 18th Street gang where Espinoza is from which includes Smiley, Alsace and Lil Lowks clicks. This is a diverse neighborhood with 25 percent black residents and according to most of the people that live there, there is little to no racial tension.
Culver City does not have any Special Order 40 provision, and after they arrested Espinoza for carrying a concealed weapon, they turned him over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Some have criticized Culver City for not investigating Espinoza's citizen status, but when an individual is suspected of committing a crime, that person must answer those charges in State court before one can be deported, so Culver City did nothing wrong with transferring custody to the County.
Jamiel Shaw Jr. was murdered approximately 2.25 miles from this 18th Street neighborhood, but 18th Street has been known to target individuals in Jamiel's neighborhood for several years. It is a conflict that has continued for more than a decade and the gangs engaged in this conflict are not randomly shooting innocent people based on race but are specifically targeting members of both sides. The outrage over Jamiel's killer being a gang member who was in the US illegally since he was 4-years old, has been overshadowed by the more serious problem of gang violence plaguing these communities. The conflict between these gangs, that are mostly US Citizens, continue to shoot and kill each other at any opportunity during the prime of their lives, while people play politics using this murder to push their own political agendas.
