Two Officer Involved Shootings Last Night

Last night, June 19, 2003 there were two unrelated officer involved shootings between the LAPD and suspected gang members. The first occurred in the afternoon in the vicinity of Western and Exposition where a suspected gang member shot and injured an LAPD officer from Southwest Division. It occurred in the neighborhood of the Harlem 30s Crips, but it is not known if they were involved in the shooting. The officer returned fire but the suspect was able to flee. The police where out there until early morning of the following day investigating.

The second shooting occurred hours later near Pico Blvd and Harvard in the Wilshire Division of the LAPD. Members of MCS (Mid City Stoners) shot at an LAPD officer. Four guys were taken into custody after several hours of baricading themselves in one of the houses on Harvard. SWAT was on the scene and several K-9 dogs assisted in the search. No one was killed in either of these 2 incidents.
And in an unrelated incident Algie Simpson, 20, was fatally shot in the 1300 block of West 104th Street about 10 p.m. Thursday in unincorporated Athens. Four suspects walked up to Simpson as he was parking his car, and one of them shot him several times in the chest while he was still sitting in the vehicle. The assailants ran away and Simpson was declared dead at the scene.
Simpson, who was a month away from turning 21, leaves a year-old son. Authorities did not immediately determine a motive for the shooting, which left his loved ones baffled. He was not a member of any gang but the street where the shooting took place is the home to the UnderGround Crips but there are several other small Crip gangs very close to this location.
