Low Poverty areas and its Geographic Relationship to gangs in Los Angeles County July 11, 2004 By Alex Alonso for Streetgangs Magazine     Examining the poverty figures for different gang areas, it appeared that 15% poverty or less represented low figures compared with the rest of the other gang areas. As one would expect, no areas that include public housing, and very few areas that were in South LA were found to be in low poverty areas, and no gang area in the central portion of South LA were considered low. This list is preliminary because not all Hispanic gangs have been mapped, but of the 300 Hispanic gangs already mapped from East LA, Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, Hollywood, Pico-Union, and Watts none were in low poverty areas. Hispanic gangs in the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley and the Newhall area have not been completely mapped and several gangs in these areas may be in low poverty areas.   But we find that gangs located in more suburban areas have lower poverty rates. Within the top 12 gangs considered to be in low poverty areas, five were in the suburban city of Carson, just south of Los Angeles.
