It is typical for gang members to belong to or be affiliated with organized religion. Since this is true, in what ways are they related and how is that relationship maintained? It is interesting to note that religion in general, do not approve of street gangs, yet gang members support the religion of their choice by contributing money and or actively recruiting for their denomination or non-denomination. In reality, these individuals are members of two opposing sects. How ever, because religion has lost it’s luster and credibility due to immorality, and terrorist acts, they have in effect, become more dangerous than any street gang in the world, thus, it has become the target of the most powerful nation on earth, the united states, the world’s greatest superpower. Since gang members are also church members, they too become a target. Can it be said that organized religion and street gangs are one and the same or at least allies? Consider this: gangs are groups of individuals who commit crimes such as murder, fraud, stealing, terrorist threat, rape, child molestation, among other things. This is also the same way religious entities operate on a daily basis. As a result, People no longer trust ministers and priest, their reprehensible conduct has cause honest hearted people who love God, to become bitter and put God second place in their lives. If Christendom as a whole were imitating Jesus who was non violent and mild tempered, our nation would not be going to war. Gang members who are “Christians” would have to be one or the other, being Christ-like would make it impossible for any gangster to be a killer.
Christendom itself is corrupt, making it easier for criminals to become a member and at the same time accusing gangs of being devilish while accepting their donations. The crimes committed in the name of religion by religions, such as Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Christendom, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, and the various tribal religions around the world, are evidence that they too, like street gangs, are not in harmony with the scriptures they claim to believe in.
Since religion is imbedded in every sector of society, including street gangs how is it that our society is full of corruption and bloodshed? If everyone practiced what they preached gangs would not exist. Even atheist claim to be good-natured people, but it’s all hogwash if they do not live by it. Bloods and Crips are sworn enemies, yet both sides claim to believe in the bible or the Qur’an, therefore, both sides are members of the same religion. Religion is a gang: In Ireland, protestants and Catholics have been killing each other on a regular basis for over thirty years, worse than any gang war in the gang capital by far. What kind of person does religion produce in people? Note what the historical figure Jesus said:” you will recognize them by their fruit, a fine tree does not produce rotten fruit and a rotten tree does not produce fine fruit, each tree is known by it’s fruit… why do you call me lord, lord and not do the things I say?” (Luke 5:43, 44, 46) apparently, Jesus is talking to those today who claim to be his subjects but refuse to follow his instructions.
An honest look at religion helps us to see the similarities it has with street gangs. Both of them are violent, corrupt, and immoral, and have great influence over the people living in the territories they occupy. For example, in south central Los Angeles, California, there exist a gang known nation wide as the NeighborHood Rolling Twenty Bloods. Inside their territories, are average citizens who work and raise children. They are not gang members, but they sympathize with bloods and are at odds with the Crips. They may not go out and kill the Crips, but they will be quick to point one out to a Blood who will be grateful and more than happy to oblige. The next article will pick up where this one left off.
