I read your article on the use of the word nigga and
was enlightened and captivated. I wanted to chime in
on your thoughts about j-lo. The reason Big-Pun,
Fat-Joe, B-real from cypress hill, and a slew of other
Hispanic rappers are not criticized for saying nigga
in there raps is because they have street credibility.
John Leguizamo probably could get away with saying
nigga. Also these people that I mentioned have no
problem referring to themselves as niggas. Can you
see J-Lo referring to herself as a nigga?? She has
pimped the ghetto. She not only broke up with Puff
Daddy, but she has broke ties with her humble
beginnings. She went from an Afro-American, to a
Hispanic?(Chris Judd), to a lily white guy(Ben
Affleck) She's free to date anyone she wants, but a
person with no street credibility can not use the word
nigga without receiving a backlash. I'm willing to
wager that there would be a backlash if Bryant Gumbel
used the word nigga.
I think that is why she suffered so much criticism. Why would she want to use that word in a song that was supposedly Latin?
I also think the reason Caucasians are upset is because they are angry that they can not use the word. To them, it is about if they cannot use the word, then "you' should not be able to either. We took a word that they used to degrade us and turned it around on them to be used as a term of endearment for us.
As for Eminem, he grew up around all black people so I don't think of him using the word as a problem. I would not even be angry with President Clinton for using it but I would be very upset if President Un-Elect Bush used it. I don't know why that is but it just is.
