W Using Geographic Informations Systems (GIS) software by ESRI, I was able to digitize all of the known gang territories and conduct several analyes of their territories. Below are a few of the over 30 maps that were published in Territoriality Among African Street Gangs in Los Angeles.
If you are interested in ordering a set of paper maps showing Black gang territories in Los Angeles for 1960, 1972, 1978, and 1996 click here or if you are interested in GIS shape files along with the attribute data that you can view in Arc View click here. If you do not have Arc View you can still view these digital shape files by using ArcExplorer, a free lightweight GIS data viewer developed by ESRI. This freely available software offers an easy way to perform basic GIS functions. ArcExplorer is used for a variety of display, query, and data retrieval applications and supports a wide variety of standard data sources.
The new ArcExplorer 3 is a complete, easy-to-use GIS data viewer that displays and queries locally stored GIS data (see above). ArcExplorer 3 is built with Java, which allows you to enjoy cross-platform support. And most important it is free. You will receive a version of this software along with all the digital gang maps that will be compatible with Windows 98/2000/ME/NT/Xp and Solaris.
