Hijos de la Guerra (2007)
Hijos de la Guerra
.
Hijos de la Guerra tells the story of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), an
international Hispanic street gang founded by Salvadoran civil war refugees, which
the U.S government singles out as the fastest-growing and most violent gang in the
country. The film explores the individual motivations behind gang membership and
the ensuing explosion of fratricidal violence, as well as the complex role of social and
government policy in attempting to contain and yet unintentionally encouraging the
spread of the gang.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has declared the Mara Salvatrucha to be the
country's largest and most violent street gang. The Bureau recently listed the fight
against the MS-13 as one of its top enforcement priorities.
The Mara Salvatrucha was formed in Los Angeles during the late 1980s by teenage
refugees from the Salvadoran civil war, as a means of protecting themselves from the crossfire of ethnic rivalries. MS-13 has since become a notorious and growing threat
throughout 33 states in the nation and every country in Central America.
At its inception, the newly formed gang channeled the widespread trauma that a
genocidal civil war had wrought on an entire generation of orphaned and militarized
kids into fanatical violence. This formed the basis for MS-13's explosive growth.
The institution of stern and increasingly systematic U.S. deportation policies, along
with forceful, armed repression of the members by the Salvadoran government,
radicalized the group and established its hold in Central America. Instead of reducing
the gang's influence, these policies amplified its reach from the barrios of a single city
to the cities of an entire continent. The violence perpetrated by members of the MS-
13 surged while its criminal activity intensified, making the gang more difficult to
control.
HIJOS DE LA GUERRA ("Children of the War") is the first feature-length
documentary film to tell the history of the MS-13. It addresses the motives and
circumstances that have fueled this gang's ominous rise to power.
