DALLAS — A 13-year-old died and a 17-year-old was critically wounded in a New Year’s Eve shooting that police said was gang-related.

Witnesses told police the two were outside an apartment about 11 p.m. Thursday in the 13600 block of Preston Road when an unknown gang member walked up and started shooting, police said.

The 17-year-old collapsed at the scene. The 13-year-old ran but collapsed a short distance away in the 5800 block of Preston View Boulevard.

The 17-year-old was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The 13-year-old was pronounced dead about 11:23 p.m. at Parkland Memorial Hospital from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

Both of the teens who were shot were known gang members and were involved in an ongoing dispute with a rival gang, according to police.
