Anti-gang efforts to focus more on female associates

Local police will be homing in on the female associates of local gangs in 2014, Wilmington Police Department Deputy Chief Mitch Cunningham told an assembled group of law enforcement, social workers and assorted other personnel on Friday.

Speaking at the eighth Annual N.C. Gang Conference at Mount Olive College, Cunningham said most of WPD’s gang-related enforcement thus far has been against men, a fact the department is trying to change.

“Our intel analysts really look at this, and one of the strategies for 2014 is really going to be, in addition to focusing on the gang members, really focusing on the females that are involved,” he said. “… We’re going to strategically focus on them. We’ve become more aware of their role in the gang problems.”
