Trial starts for Mexican Mafia fugitive

VIK JOLLY (THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER) | January 4, 2012

SANTA ANA – A federal jury in Santa Ana will hear opening statements Wednesday in the case of one of the last remaining defendants of the 43 Mexican Mafia members indicted in 1999 on racketeering and other charges.

Rolando Ontiveros, a fugitive until 2009, is facing multiple counts and was part of the indictments stemming from a 2½-year task force investigation into the Mexican Mafia in the 1990s, consisting of approximately 130 federal and state law enforcement officers.

Of the 43 Mexican Mafia suspects indicted then, 39 were convicted, according to officials and published reports. Two were acquitted and one was cleared and freed shortly after being indicted. Ontiveros remained a fugitive.

A federal grand jury charged the defendants in the major crackdown on the Mexican Mafia, which was also commonly called “La Eme.”

Among the arrested were those accused of killing three men on Nov. 19, 1998, in Montebello and five women accused of helping the prison-based gang conduct business on the streets of Southern California, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
