The man was hit by gunfire just after 2 p.m. at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Adams Boulevard, said Lt. Ellis Imaizumi, a watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Newton Community Police Station.

After being shot, the man drove away in his red Chevrolet Camaro, striking the back of another car in the process, said department spokeswoman Officer Sara Faden.

The injured driver continued about three-quarters of a mile and pulled into the parking lot of a parole office in the 2400 block of South Alameda Street, where someone spotted him and called police, Faden said.

The shooting victim was taken to a hospital in serious condition but was stable after undergoing surgery, Faden said. The driver of the other car was not injured.

Gang detectives are investigating the incident.

In the last six months, there have been 235 violent crimes in the Central-Alameda neighborhood, according to data compiled by the Los Angeles Times.
