Teen gang member gets 80 years for drug debt shooting

Kevin Amerman (THE MORNING CALL) | January 10, 2011

A teenage gang member will spend up to 80 years behind bars after admitting Monday to kil#i*gg a woman and trying to ki*l the woman’s boyfriend in an Allentown apartment in May while attempting to collect a drug debt.

Angel Rivera, 17, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and attempted homicide and was immediately sentenced by Lehigh County Judge Robert L. Steinberg to 40 to 80 years in state prison.

Although he was 16 at the time of the shooting, Rivera was charged as an adult.

By entering the plea, Rivera avoided a trial that had been scheduled to begin Monday. He could have been convicted of first-degree murder, which would have resulted in a life sentence.

Steinberg noted that Rivera won’t be eligible for parole until he’s 57 years old.
