Sacramento City Unified, Boys and Girls Club launch gang-prevention program

The Sacramento City Unified School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento to launch a gang prevention program with the help of a $325,000 federal grant.

The program will target 100 at-risk children from four elementary schools by providing mentoring and after-school activities. The participating schools – Jedediah Smith, Washington, Peter Burnett and Elder Creek – are in communities affected by gang activity, said Tracey Lopez, a gang violence prevention and intervention supervisor with Sacramento City Unified.

Fourth- through sixth-grade students are referred to the program through courts, police, schools, parents and other agencies.

“I know the Boys and Girls Club can truly make a difference with these kids,” said Maureen Price, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento.

The U.S. Department of Justice is funding the program, which is called Gang Prevention Through Targeted Outreach. The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento was one of 10 clubs selected nationwide to administer the program, which will begin later this month.
