A 15-year-old boy is in custody this afternoon after stabbing the principal at an all-boys Catholic school in Rosemead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Gary Catalano, principal of the Don Bosco Technical Institute, had been meeting with a student in his office after noon when the student pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed him, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana. Catalano was taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition with superficial slash wounds.

Authorities were called around 12:15 p.m. and took the student into custody, Saldana said. His identity is being withheld because of his age.

One student, who asked to remain anonymous, said students are stunned.

“The mood is tense and shocked,” he said.
