lapd search for gunman 012115Los Angeles police have called off a search in South L.A. for two people, one of them a gunman who they say pointed his weapon at officers.

Police dogs and SWAT officers searched a four-block area in South L.A. for hours Wednesday morning but were unable to find them.

It all started about 1:20 a.m. when officers patrolling the neighborhood at 52nd Street and Saint Andrews Place were flagged down by a citizen who alerted them to a group of people with a firearm, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Los Angeles police are asking residents in a four-block area in South L.A. to stay inside their homes early Wednesday after they fired shots at a gunman who they say pointed his gun at officers.

Officers approached the people, who got into a vehicle and drove away.

Police followed in a short pursuit. The vehicle crashed into parked cars, and the occupants fled. One person was caught at that time and taken into custody.

Police ran after a second suspect, who they say pointed a weapon at them, and at least one officer opened fire. It was unclear whether the suspect was injured or whether he fired a weapon, Eisenman said.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

Moments later, police received a call in the neighborhood of 57th Street and Saint Andrews Place, where a resident reported hearing someone in her garage.

Police searched the area and asked residents to remain in their homes before calling off the search.
