Gang member faces death sentence for murdering 6 homeless in Long Beach

A gang member who is facing the death penalty for the murders of five people at a homeless encampment near a Long Beach freeway in 2008 and the shooting death of a man in the Lancaster area in 2009 is set to be sentenced Thursday.

The Los Angeles Superior Court jury that heard the case against David Cruz Ponce, 37, recommended last Oct. 2 that he be sentenced to death for the crimes.

Co-defendant Max Eliseo Rafael — who was convicted of the homeless encampment kil#i*ggs but was not charged with the Lancaster-area kil#i*gg — was sentenced Jan. 18 to five consecutive life prison terms without the possibility of parole.
