3 arrested in Santa Ana shooting death
SEAN EMERY (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER) | February 21, 2013
SANTA ANA – Three men have been arrested in connection with what police said was a gang-related shooting in a Santa Ana alley that left one person dead and another seriously injured.
Julio Sanchez Jr., 19; Vicente Vega, 19; and Salomon Lopez, 32, were taken into custody late Wednesday and early Thursday during a joint operation carried out by members of the Santa Ana Police Department’s career criminals unit, strike force and gang unit detectives, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
Police say all three men, as well as the two victims, have ties to Santa Ana street gangs. Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a gang rivalry.
Officers responding to reports of a shooting shortly after 5:15 p.m. Feb. 14 in the 1900 block of West Third Street found an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds in an alley near North Daisy Avenue.
The 19-year-old, who was later identified as Joseph Castro, died after being taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. Police say the 18-year-old survived and is recovering from his wounds.
Investigators allege Sanchez, Vega and Lopez were in a vehicle traveling eastbound in the alley when it stopped near Castro and the other man.
