Arrests by Riverside County Gang Task Force climb

A task force charged with reducing gang activity across Riverside County made 678 more arrests in 2011 than it did a year earlier.
The Riverside County Gang Task Force arrested 2,406 people last year — a 39 percent increase from 1,728 arrests in 2010, law enforcement officials announced Thursday.
About 290 of the arrests were in the Coachella Valley, which is home to 2,400 gang members, Task Force Director Leonard Hollingsworth said.
Nearly half of last year’s arrestees were documented gang members arrested on charges ranging from drug sales and firearm possession to assault, kidnapping or murder.Officials also found 203 guns — up 17 percent from 2010 — and did 5,976 probation and parole searches.
