1 killed in Santa Ana shooting

SEAN EMERY (THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER) | March 12, 2012

SANTA ANA – A man was killed Monday night in a shooting that authorities believe to be gang-related.

Officers about 6:30 p.m. responded to reports of shots fired and a man down in a parking lot of an apartment complex at the corner of North Spurgeon Street and East 15th Street.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later, Santa Ana police Cmdr. Steve Colon said.

The man’s name has not been released.

While investigators do not yet know whether the victim had any gang ties, the location and circumstances of the shooting led them to believe it was gang-related, Colon said.

Police on Monday night were sifting through multiple witness accounts and had not released a description of the shooter or shooters.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting, which is being investigated by the department’s gang homicide unit.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the gang unit at 714-245-8648.
