MAN WITH KNIFE 2 ORANGE A man who may have been threatening to set himself on fire and eventually pulled a knife on police after a traffic stop was shot by officers around 11 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Officers attempted to stop a white GMC minivan for a traffic violation and while he eventually did pull over in the 100 block of West Katella Avenue, the driver refused to get out of the vehicle and barricaded himself inside, police Sgt. Rob Thorsen said.

The driver, described as a 35-year-old resident of Orange, who was alone and shirtless in the vehicle retrieved a gas can and lighter, he said.

Not knowing if the man was suicidal or preparing an incendiary device to use against officers, police devised a non-lethal strategy to force the man out of the vehicle and prevent him from starting a fire.
