Gang link suspected in drive-by homicide

By Daily News

Monday, March 17, 2003 – CANYON COUNTRY — Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the weekend shooting death of a Canyon Country man for gang ties.

Victim Marcos Arellano, 19, had some affiliation with a local gang, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Marilyn Baker said Monday.

His death was the first homicide of the year in Santa Clarita, consistently ranked among the five safest cities in the nation by the FBI.

Arellano was gunned down about 12:35 a.m. Saturday by someone in a passing car. He and his brother were walking along Soledad Canyon Road at Luther Drive, heading home from a party, Baker said.

The gunman’s vehicle was believed to be a dark-color Saturn with tinted windows and two to four people inside. Arellano was shot once in the upper body. He exchanged words with the occupants of the car before he was shot, Baker said.

The shooting was near the Soledad Entertainment Center, anchored by the Edwards Theatres, a popular teen hangout. Any witnesses are asked to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.h
