STOCKTON – A 14-year-old boy was killed and a 22-year-old man injured in a shooting in south Stockton on Tuesday afternoon, the Stockton Police Department reported.

The two were with two or three other people, all male, hanging out in a parking lot in the 200 block of East Charter Way, police said.

About 3 p.m., a second group of men, roughly the same number, came walking up an alley between San Joaquin and Hunter streets. Several shots were fired from the second group, hitting two members of the first group and scattering the rest, Stockton police Detective Roseann Clark said.

Judging from early indications, there was no evidence of an exchange – either of words or of gunfire – between the two groups, Clark said.

The two who were shot fell in front of Latinoamericana Travel, 230 E. Charter Way. The 22-year-old, from Stockton, suffered a moderate injury. The 14-year-old, also from Stockton, was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died. Police are not releasing his name pending notification of his family.

Investigators say the shooting appears to have been gang-related.

The 22-year-old victim has been documented as a gang member by the Stockton Police Department. The 14-year-old was not a documented gang member but had gang tattoos, including the letter S on both arms, Clark said.

“That’s an indication of Sureño involvement,” Clark said.

A man who said he was an eyewitness to the shooting, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, lamented the frequency of Latino-on-Latino violence in Stockton.

“What is at all about?” he asked.

The man said that after the two groups had fled, he tried to comfort the victims, telling them they were going to be all right.

Later, when he learned the boy had likely died, he turned away suddenly, shaking his head in disbelief.
