yadira arroyo 44-year-old Yadira Arroyo was struck and killed, run over by her own ambulance, after it was stolen.
Tuesday in Albany, a union representing New York paramedics gathered around Sen. Martin Golden R-Brooklyn, to support the bill he wrote up in response to Arroyo’s tragic death in New York CIty. A crime he says should never have happened, because he says the 25-year-old suspect should’ve been in jail.

“Then we find out this guy was a gang member that he’s been arrested 31 times and that he’s been released,” Golden said.

Sen. Golden’s bill, dubbed the “The New York State Criminal Street Gang Act” would create stronger penalties for gang members, to keep them off the street longer.

“We’d bump the crime on the gang so if it was an ‘A’ misdemeanor it’d turn into an ‘E’ felony,” Arroyo said.

Schenectady Sgt. Matt Dearing says there are several well-known and local gangs in our area. He likes that the bill provides a legal definition of a street gang.
