Additional arrest made in 2009 Oxnard fatal stabbing

Ventura County Star | April 2, 2013

Oxnard police on Tuesday announced the third major development within a week in the case of a 2009 fatal stabbing.

Authorities said Jorge Cervantes, 19, of Oxnard, was arrested at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in connection with the slaying of Alfredo Vargas, which police called gang-motivated.

Cervantes was arrested near Pleasant Valley and Perkins roads after officers saw him riding in a vehicle, police said. He was taken to Ventura County jail, where he will be awaiting court proceedings, police said.

Tuesday’s announcement followed the news a week earlier that charges had been filed against Alexis Ramirez, 23, for his alleged role in the case. Ramirez was already in state prison at Norco, serving time after being convicted of robbery with a gang enhancement. Then on Friday, police announced the arrest of Jonathan Gallegos, 21, of Newbury Park, as suspect in the slaying.

Vargas died after a Jan. 17, 2009, reported fight in the 2700 block of El Dorado Avenue.

Investigators suspect Vargas’ killing was among five Oxnard homicides they say were committed from 2006 to 2012 by members of the Lemonwood Chiques gang.

Police launched a task force in August to investigate the slayings.
