Prosecutors filed charges Monday against a reputed gang member accused of shooting at a man after a botched carjacking.

Jessie Abbott Duran, 24, of Whittier was charged with attempted carjacking, attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon with four prior convictions, according to Sarah Ardalani, spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities also alleged that Duran personally and intentionally fired a handgun and that the crimes were committed for the benefit of, and at the direction of a street gang.

He will be arraigned April 14 at Norwalk Superior Court. If convicted of all the charges, Ardalani said Duran faces up to life in state prison.

The charges stem from an April 3 incident in the 6500 block of Newlin Avenue in Whittier.

Whittier police spokesman Officer Bradley White said a resident arrived home, parked his car in the alley and was approached by another man who demanded his vehicle.

The resident refused, drove off and called police.
