Flower Power To Push Gang Activity Out

Flower Power To Push Gang Activity Out
Fullerton Hopes New Name of Street Will Deter A Gang Elsewhere

FULLERTON, Posted 10:50 p.m. April 21, 1998 — The Fullerton City Council employed “flower power” tonight in the fight against gang activity on a dead-end street.

Soon the home turf of “the Baker Street Gang” will no longer be Baker Avenue. It’ll be Iris Court, city spokeswoman Sylvia Palmer told City News Service.

But the 4-1 vote was not unanimous, so a second reading of the ordinance will be necessary in two weeks. The whole process of changing the street name will “probably take about a month,” Palmer said.

The 2300 block of West Baker Avenue has 16 fourplexes and a reputation for gangs, crime and substandard living.

But two weeks ago, the City Council postponed renaming Baker Street to Pansy Circle, saying they liked the idea of giving the street a flowery name, but Pansy Circle might offend the wrong people, said CBS 2 News.

“It was a consensus to pick the name of a flower that would not be conducive to a gang tie,” Sgt. David Stanko told CBS 2 News’ Jaie Avila.

Sure enough, the proposed name change had Baker street gang members stirred up. They told Avila the name sounds “girly.”

According to CNS, iris was suggested by Mayor Pro Tem Jan Flory at the last meeting, and the idea seemed to bloom after that.

Two people spoke against the name change, neither of whom live on the street that will soon be Iris Court.

One woman said “Iris” may just force the Baker gang closer to her street nearby. Another said the street name change may fail to accomplish the council’s goal, reported the wire service.
