Oakland lays groundwork for third gang injunction

OAKLAND — The Oakland city attorney’s office, already embroiled in a long-running legal fight over whether it can restrict the movements of alleged gang members in the Fruitvale neighborhood, is making plans to seek a similar court order in East Oakland.

Records that City Attorney John Russo’s office released Monday show that the city has paid $20,000 to the law firm Meyers Nave in recent months to work on a civil injunction against an unidentified gang in East Oakland.

“The plan has always been to do an injunction in (East Oakland),” said Alex Katz, a spokesman for the city attorney.

The future of the effort, however, is clouded. Russo is poised to leave office after 11 years to become city manager in Alameda, and the City Council has not appointed a successor.
