A Las Vegas man has been arrested in connection with the March slaying of a Moorpark man in Oxnard, police said Thursday.

Lewis Warron Brown, 22, is suspected of killing Bruce Barksdale, 19, outside the Channel Islands Inn and Suites in Oxnard on March 8.

Barksdale, who grew up in Oxnard but whose last known address was in Moorpark, was shot while walking out of the hotel after visiting friends there, Oxnard Police Sgt. Jim Seitz said.

Oxnard police suspected Brown was in the Las Vegas area, and they had been working with Nevada authorities, including the North Las Vegas Police Department, Las Vegas Metro Gang Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Office there, to find him. Authorities had searched several addresses there but were unable to find him until Saturday.

On Saturday, Las Vegas police were searching several motels for people with outstanding arrest warrants when they coincidentally found Brown at one of them, Seitz said. At the time, officers did not know Brown would be there or that he was wanted on a homicide warrant out of Oxnard.

Brown tried to flee but was apprehended and arrested on suspicion of possessing narcotics for sale and resisting arrest, Seitz said. He gave authorities a different name but was identified through fingerprints, Seitz said.

“It was lucky,” Seitz said. “We can look for people for months or years, and sometimes they just fall in your lap.”

An extradition hearing will be held to bring Brown back to Oxnard to face homicide charges.

Police said they don’t know the motive behind Barksdale’s killing but believe it involved a personal dispute.
