A 19-year-old man was shot and killed in Compton early Sunday in what is believed to be a gang-related incident, authorities said. Homicide detectives responded to a report of shots fired in the 300 block of South Harris Avenue about 1:30 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Erwin Ramirez of Gardena was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. A second victim, who was not identified, was wounded and taken to a local hospital where he was expected to survive.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
[Updated, 4:15 p.m.: Since January 2007, at least 40 homicides have occurred within one mile of the killing Sunday on South Harris Avenue, according to data collected for The Times’ interactive Homicide Report. Over the same period, 124 homicides have been reported in Compton by L.A. County coroner’s officials.]
