Playa Del Rey – Rival gang members exchanged gunfire on Thursday near Dockweiler State Beach when some of them arrived in a rented stretch Hummer to celebrate so-called Hood Day, police said.

One person was wounded and another was struck by the limousine, said Sgt. Richard Parks of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Station.

The confrontation occurred about 3 p.m. about two blocks inland from the beach, near the 7300 block of Vista Del Mar Lane, Parks said.

There were about eight reputed gang members and several females in the Hummer when they encountered rival gang members, exchanged insults and then gunfire, police said.

The Hummer was hit by several bullets, police said. As the vehicle left, it struck and dragged a man. He was said to be in critical condition.

Another man in his 30s was shot in the chest and was in stable condition, police said.

Police later stopped the Hummer on the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway, east of Vermont Avenue, in South Los Angeles, Parks said.

About eight suspected members of the Blood Stone Villains and Compton Piru gangs and several female friends were inside, according to police.

The driver was detained and several other people were booked on warrants not related to the shooting, Parks said. An investigation was continuing.

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call the Pacific Station at (310) 482-6335.
