An Oxnard man was sentenced to life without parole today for the first-degree murder of a rival gang member in 2003.

Jose Luis Navarro Garcia, 22, was found guilty in March for the first degree murder and special allegations that he used a shotgun to kill 23-year-old David Marceleno, also of Oxnard, and that the murder was committed while lying in wait and for the benefit of a gang.

Today, Ventura County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Riley also gave Garcia an additional 55 years for committing the crime for the benefit of a gang and personal use of a firearm and the discharge of that weapon to cause death.

Garcia will first serve the 55 years followed by his life sentence, Senior District Attorney Maeve Fox said.
