Reputed gang member convicted in La Habra Halloween slashing

Robert J. Lopez (Los Angeles Times) | May 17, 2012

A reputed gang member was convicted Thursday in a deadly 2009 Halloween slashing in La Habra, authorities said.

Steven Salvador Hernandez, 19, was accused of stabbing the 18-year-old victim in the neck while he was being attacked at a party with a bat and fists by two other gang members, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

The victim, Joshua Mora-Rodriguez, 18, was left bleeding to death on the street where he was assaulted. He was not a gang member, prosecutors said.

Mora-Rodriguez, the son of two police officers, had just graduated from high school and was preparing to join the Army.

Hernandez was a juvenile at the time but was prosecuted as an adult. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 27 at the Fullerton courthouse. He faces 15 years to life in state prison.

Two other people suspected in the attack are awaiting trial.
