CHICO, Calif. – Chico Police are searching for suspects after three people were shot early Saturday morning in a neighborhood north of the Chico State campus. It happened on North Cedar Street at approximately 2:00 a.m. as a party attended by more than 100 people was winding down. None of the three people shot were seriously injured.

“I heard very distinctly four or five shots go off,” said Katie Harrison, a junior at Chico State who lives in an apartment complex nearby. Harrison, who grew up in San Diego, plans to return to Chico State for her senior year but will find a safer neighborhood to live in.

Other Chico State students have experienced brushes with danger in this neighborhood. Aaron Schumaker, who was recently attacked, says the danger is almost routine.

“You get jumped,” shrugged Schumaker. “It happens and it’s scary.”

Chico State encourages incoming students to live on campus inside residence halls before going it alone. “They have RA’s [Resident Advisors] who live in the halls and help them learn about Chico and experience it in the right way,” said university spokesperson Joe Wills.

Wills points out that many of the best colleges are centered in a city’s hub, where oftentimes violence happens. He says Chico State is no different.
