5 wounded after multiple gang shootings in Van Nuys

In an unusual spike of gang activity, five gang members have been wounded in separate shootings in Van Nuys in the last two weeks, police said Thursday.

Four of the shootings have occurred in the last six days, and police so far have made one arrest.

“I’ve worked gangs for five years and I’ve never seen this many in one week,” said Sgt. Nick Nemecek of the gang unit at LAPD Van Nuys Division.

“It’s very unusual.”

In the most recent incident, a 23-year-old man survived a drive-by shooting while walking at Vanowen Street and Hazeltine Avenue at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, according to Nemecek.

A bullet grazed the man’s head and locals reported hearing seven to 10 gunshots, Nemecek said.

Another shooting occurred near the same intersection on May 12, leaving the victim paralyzed from the chest down after he was shot in the head and back, Nemecek said.

Police were trying to determine whether the shootings were linked. “The first couple of ones seem to be personal issues between gang members,” Nemecek said. “We’re still trying to work on whether or not there’s an ongoing feud with the last three of them.”
