Gang member found guilty in rival’s slaying

Wednesday, May 26, 2004 – LANCASTER — A gang member who shot a gang rival for saying “What’s up, dawg?” to him on a downtown Lancaster street has been convicted of first-degree murder.

Larry Davidson, 24, took that greeting as disrespectful and shot and ki*led 21-year-old Quorne Warren of Lancaster on Date Avenue near Sacred Heart School one night in July 2000, prosecutors said.

“Mr. Davidson was believed to be an East Coast Crips gang member. The victim was a Limehood Piru Blood. Bloods and Crips are enemies in the gang world,” Deputy District Attorney Carlos Chung said. “There are some discrepancies, but the victim may have said something to get the defendant angry.”

Warren was shot in the neck and was paralyzed. He was put on a ventilator and clung to life for months before dying at a San Bernardino hospital in April 2001.

Davidson was convicted in December 2000 of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison. He was returned to court to face a murder charge after Warren died.

Davidson faces two terms of 25 years to life in prison for the murder conviction, but prosecutors said earlier he would likely serve that sentence concurrently with his earlier sentence.

Davidson’s attorney, David Houchin, argued that another man had committed the murder, and that two people who were present when it occurred refused to testify.

“Someone else shot him, who owned the pistol and lived at the place where the pistol was recovered,” Houchin said. “A box of .32-caliber shells was recovered, missing eight rounds.”

Houchin also said cause of death was an issue.

“The coroner that the prosecution used from San Bernardino County indicated the patient should have had regular care and attendance by a neurosurgeon, and he had none,” Houchin said.

A Lancaster Superior Court jury reached its guilty verdict Tuesday after deliberating about a day. Davidson is scheduled to be sentenced July 16.

Davidson was sentenced in January 2001 to life plus 25 years to life in prison. Two co-defendants had earlier entered pleas to being accessories after the fact and were not retried, officials said.
