San Juan homework club brings kids after-school help

New program at the Village San Juan community is part of the city’s Gang Reduction and Intervention Program to help kids considered at risk of having trouble in school or getting involved in gangs.

Homework has become the after-school recreational activity of choice on Wednesdays in the Village San Juan community of San Juan Capistrano.

About 2:30 p.m., 30 to 60 elementary school kids converge on the community clubhouse for The Villages Homework Club, a new program staffed by parent and teacher volunteers and high school students.

Harold Abe, a school resources officer serving San Juan Capistrano with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, began the program in April as part of the city’s Gang Reduction and Intervention Program, which since 2008 has used grant funding to pay for after-school programs, counseling services and community engagement initiatives. The club apparently has filled a need – after five weeks, more than 60 children have signed up for the program.

Abe said finding the clubhouse was a big step in his struggle to help communities in San Juan where many children could be at risk of having trouble in school or getting involved in gangs. Many students there are bused to schools miles away in Mission Viejo. Their parents rarely leave their communities, often work long hours and usually don’t have cars, Abe said.

The clubhouse in Village San Juan splits the distance between the communities and the schools. Abe and some volunteers also plan to use the clubhouse to offer karate and nutrition and health clblankes taught by volunteers from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
