The shooting of three people near the intersection of Walter Street and Phoenix Avenue on Thursday evening was gang related and appears to be a flare up of a longtime gang rivalry, a Riverside police sergeant said in a telephone interview Friday.

Members of two rival gangs got into a fight and one group left, said Sgt. Kendell Banks. A group of people who were in the fight or who were blankociated with people in the fight returned in a vehicle and three people in the vehicle were shot with one gun, Banks said.

The victims are expected to survive gunshot wounds to their feet and legs, Banks said.

The victims are 15, 17, and 21 years old, said Detective Scott Impola. Impola said he could not reveal the names of the victims for their safety.

Violence between the two gangs has ebbed and flowed for at least 17 years, Banks said.

“We’re hoping (there will be no further violence). We have no information that there is going to be more, but there is a possibility there could be,” Banks said.
