SANTA ANA – A 15-year-old boy shot in the head two weeks ago became the latest victim of gang violence when he was removed from life support early Friday.

Juan Carlos Davila, of Santa Ana, died at 12:10 p.m., said Sgt. Lorenzo Carrillo of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Davila was shot while walking with a friend in the 1100 block of West Pine Street by a man driving a white Suburban, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. The driver asked the boys about their gang affiliation, he said.

The boy and his friend shouted their gang affiliation, Bertagna said. The driver shot Davila in the head and tried to chase down his friend, but missed twice and drove off.

More than a dozen young men with shaved heads gathered on Daisy Street Friday afternoon to pay their respects to Davila.

Davila’s death marks the third gang-related homicide in Santa Ana this year. The city has been struggling with a rash of gang-related violence, including two homicides in the last week.

A 22-year-old man was gunned down by a group of gang members while trying to defend his friend during an early morning robbery Sunday. Two gang members have been charged with murdering Jose Felix Nieto-Bautista, according to court records.

Nieto-Bautista, who has no gang ties, was shot in the neck just before 2:30 a.m. May 23 while fighting with the group of gang members, Bertagna said. He jumped in the driver’s side of his car and drove off, but hit several parked cars and died. His passenger was not hurt.

Jimmy Tlamasico and Ranferi Ivan Cruz are being held without bail.

The latest uptick in gang violence began May 6 when a 17-year-old suspected gang member through the heart on May 6. The teenager survived.

Hours later a 17-year-old boy driving near 919 S. Garnsey was shot in the neck during another drive-by shooting. The teenager lost control of his car and smashed into a parked car.

He survived.

Six minutes later, shots rang out at Logan Park on Custer Street, leaving a teenager shot in the arm. Authorities responded with a roundup of suspects by Santa Ana gang officers Thursday, arresting 13 people.

During “Operation Clean Sweep,” a joint effort by Santa Ana police, the California Highway Patrol and parole and probation officers, authorities hit 31 Santa Ana locations in a matter of hours, arresting Eddy Humberto Alvarado on suspicion of shooting the 17-year-old boy through the heart.

Twelve other people with violent criminal histories also were arrested. A Tec-9 gun was also seized and the owner arrested on a weapons violation, Bertagna said.
