WHITTIER – A gang member shot another man in the leg late Monday night, but was arrested several hours later after being found and bitten by a police dog, authorities said Tuesday.Whittier police Lt. Steve Dean said officers received reports of a shooting in the 9100 block of Bright Avenue about 8:20 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found both the victim, who had been shot in the thigh, and the suspected shooter still in the area.

Dean said the suspect, Juan Sosa, 20, of Whittier fled from the officers to the home of an acquaintance in the 8900 block of Bluford Avenue, which was only a short distance away.

The family living there escaped and police locked down both that home and a nearby home in the 13000 block of Foxley Drive, where Sosa, a member of the Wicked Marijuanos street gang, was believed to live.

Dean said police called out a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team, which entered the home just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Sosa was found hiding in the back yard by a dog belonging to the sheriff’s department. He was bitten by the dog and taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was later released and transported to the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, where he is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on $50,000 bail.

Dean said the other man was also taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
