Cops: Gang Member Made Fake 911 Call for Faster Response

June 2, 2010

A South Side gang member is accused of placing a fake 911 call to Chicago police claiming he was shot in order to get officers to respond to him quicker so he could report his vehicle stolen, police said this morning.

Joshua Coleman, 21, of the 5600 block of South Wells Street, was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony disorderly conduct after police say he filed a false police report in the Englewood police district, one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city.

About 4:22 p.m. Tuesday, Englewood District officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 400 block of West Englewood Avenue. When they arrived, they searched for a gunshot victim but found none, police said.

Officers eventually learned that Coleman called police, and while waiting for police to file a report about his stolen vehicle, “he called 911 a second time and said he had been shot, in order to get police to respond quicker,” police said.

Coleman, who police say is a self-admitted gang member, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He is due to appear for a bond hearing today in Cook County Criminal Court.
