Fresno Police Ramping Up Gang Crackdown

The Fresno Police Department is adjusting their tactics after a violent weekend.

Four people have been killed since last Wednesday with three of those murders occurring over the holiday weekend.

The violence comes after the department launched a crackdown on gangs in Southwest Fresno a little more than a month ago.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the department isn’t letting up and will continue to track down violent gang members but also says they are adjusting their tactics. Chief Dyer said, “…contacting those individuals where ever they may be, whether that’s out on the street, on foot, in their vehicle, in the their homes, at their girlfriends homes… we’re going to be paying them a visit.”

The Crime Suppression Team in Southwest Fresno has been tasked with finding gang members and parolees; those known to be involved in violence. Sergeant Joe Alvarez with the Fresno Police Department said, “It takes away people’s anonymity. If you have a gentleman that’s on the street that’s going to go do a crime, maybe right down the street – officers can talk to him and if he continues with that crime, the first thing that going to be know is, you’ve got a log, the officers have spoken to him…”

Chief Dyer said, “Whatever it takes to make their life uncomfortable utilizing the SWAT Team — whatever it takes to send message we’re tired of violence and community is tired of violence.”

Chief Dyer says they have good leads in the murders over the weekend and also says the gang crackdown will continue indefinitely.
