FREMONT — Four people could face criminal charges today in connection with a gang-related shooting that left two people wounded early Thursday.

Police did not release the names of the people arrested — because the report was not completed as of Thursday afternoon — but two men and two women were being held on suspicion of blankault with a deadly weapon, said Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran.

Two male victims, one of whom is 26, suffered minor gunshot wounds when their pickup truck was hit with two blasts from a shotgun, Veteran said. A third person in the vehicle was not hurt.

What prompted the shooting remained unclear Thursday, but the case has been turned over to the Southern Alameda County Gang Task Force for investigation, the detective said.

Two officers patrolling the area of Thornton Avenue and Post Street heard the gunshots and checked the area for victims and suspects.

An off-duty Oakland police officer at a nearby fast food restaurant flagged them down and provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle, which officers found minutes later near Paseo Padre Parkway and Peralta Avenue, Veteran said.

Officers detained five people at gunpoint, but a sixth person fled, he said. Police later searched the vehicle and found a shotgun and one spent shell casing.

Four of the detained people were arrested and booked into Fremont City Jail, while a teenage girl was released to the custody of her mother with a citation to appear in court, Veteran said.

Witnesses told police that the vehicles were stopped briefly next to each other at a stop sign on Thornton Avenue, and as the pickup truck pulled away, a Scion drove next to them and a pblankenger fired two shots into the vehicle.

Two people in the truck suffered minor injuries and drove themselves to a local hospital. They were treated for nonlife-threatening wounds and later released, Veteran said.
