Jose Enrique Gordillo Portocarrero, also known as “Bandito,” 22, of Sterling, was sentenced Friday to 148 months, just over 12 years, in prison, followed by a term of five years of supervised release, for his role in a drive-by shooting in 2008.

Portocarrero pled guilty to aiding and abetting attempted murder and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

According to court documents, Portocarrero and two other MS-13 members were traveling in the Portocarrero’s vehicle near Sterling, when one of the passengers observed a suspected rival gang member walking down a nearby street with a pregnant female companion. After seeing the rival, Portocarrero pulled his vehicle over as the two passengers exited the vehicle and made it clear that they were going to pursue and attack the rival.

As Portocarrero drove his vehicle down the street, he heard the sound of multiple gun shots followed by the sirens of police and emergency vehicles. Portocarrero picked up one of the MS-13 members and drove him to an overpass where he discarded the used ammunition casings.

Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, both the suspected rival gang member and his companion suffered received emergency medical treatment and survived the attack.

The Mara Salvatrucha gang (also known as MS, Mara, and MS-13), originated in Los Angeles in the 1980s by Salvadorian immigrants.

According to reports by The Washington Post, MS-13’s original purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other, more established Mexican and African-American gangs in Los Angeles.

In recent years, the gang has spread throughout the country, including Washington, D.C. and it’s surrounding metro areas.
