Angels outfielder donates to anti-gang program

LARRY WELBORN (THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER) | June 22, 2012

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter surprised the Orange County District Attorney’s Office Friday with a $50,000 donation to the Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership, which supports programs to keep children in school and out of gangs, according to a news release.

Hunter presented District Attorney Tony Rackauckas with the donation and saluted the effectiveness of the program, according to the release. All the money will go directly to programs benefitting students in the targeted areas. Hunter’s donation is also the first financial contribution to be made to the District Attorney’s Office for OC GRIP from a private donor.

Hunter, introduced to the program in 2008 by Angels Vice President of Communications Tim Mead, speaks to more than 1,000 students each year at the annual GRIP Angels incentive game and has participated in a GRIP promotional video at targeted schools.
