MyFox Los Angeles |Gang Injunction Issued In Northeast LA County

Created: Tuesday, 24 Jun 2008, 2:32 PM PDT

Los Angeles — A judge today issued a preliminary injunction to restrict the criminal activity of a gang that operates in northeast Los Angeles County and uses the Sylmar Recreation Center as a de facto headquarters.

The measure approved by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David P. Yaffe forbids the San Fer gang from engaging in criminal and nuisance activities within a 9.5-square-mile area bounded by the Golden State (5) Freeway to the west, the Foothill (210) Freeway to the north and east and the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway to the south.

Terms of the injunction include limiting members of the gang from associating with each other in public, intimidating witnesses, selling or possessing drugs, weapons or graffiti tools.

The injunction also directs gang members to stay away from Sylmar Recreation Center. According to court papers, members congregate at the center, where they engage in gang fights and graffiti vandalism, intimidate and threaten students from nearby Sylmar High School and Olive Vista Middle School,  and actively recruit new members.

District Attorney Steve Cooley said when the lawsuit was filed in April that the San Fer gang is “a territorial and violent criminal street gang that has been terrorizing citizens in northeastern Los Angeles County for years.”
