Man killed by sheriff’s deputies in Hawthorne was armed with a handgun, authorities say

A man shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Thursday night in Hawthorne was armed with a handgun, authorities said Friday.

Deputies were on patrol near the 12800 block of South Prairie Avenue when they spotted a known gang member and parolee. They turned their car to talk to him, but he got into a car and refused commands to get out, said Sgt. Diane Hecht.

“Suddenly the suspect got out of the car and began fighting the deputies,” Hecht said.

During the struggle, one deputy swept the suspect’s waistband and felt a weapon. At least one deputy then shot the suspect. He died at the scene.

A handgun was recovered, authorities said. One deputy struck in the face was treated for bruises.

The slain man’s name was not released, nor were the names of the deputies involved.
